The Complicated 8-hour Lower Jaw Reconstruction Restores all the functions of the Youth
Hyderabad 29th April 2016 : A team of Maxillofacial surgeons at Sunshine Hospitals, Hyderabad, headed by Dr. Dinesh Sharma, one of city's reputed Maxillofacial surgeons have successfully performed a complicated surgery of lower jaw reconstruction on a 21 years old victim of a recent bomb blast (19/12/2015) , in Somalia. The Mohamed Ahmed Ulsow the victim, lost his lower jaw completely due to the bomb blast while working in his office
Chief Maxillofacial surgeon, Dr.Dinesh Sharma said, "Mohamed Ulasow has come to Hyderabad along with his family for the treatment of lost lower jaw. The lower jaw, medically termed as mandible, is very essential for talking, eating, closing mouth, holding tongue in position. Due to the loss of lower jaw, the patient was unable to perform all these functions to the extent that he was unable to sleep, as the tongue falls back while sleeping. He was dependent on nasal tube for feeding and presented to us on a wheel chair.
"After performing all the tests, we spoke to the family and explained about microvascular reconstruction of the lower jaw using a bone from his own leg. With their consent along with a team of maxillofacial surgeons, Dr.Suresh P.L and Dr. Navatha, the lower jaw was reconstructed along with its blood supply in an eight hours long surgery. We retrieved fibula bone from his left leg along with blood vessels, reshaped it to replicate mandible, fixed it in place and connected it to the regional blood vessels" he further added. The advantage of this procedure is, we can implant artificial teeth into the bone later to help him chew normally
The patient was able to start all his functions as early as 10 days post-operatively. Though microvascular reconstruction of mandible is not a recent advancement, its use in bombblast site is quite complicated. It poses a significant challenge to the surgeon as the tissues are shattered due to the blast intensity, making identification of the tissue planes and healthy blood vessels difficult.
Dr.Sharma also added,Sunshine Hospitals is well equipped with good infrastructure enabling the surgeon to obtain excellent results in such complicated cases.
